XR is a robotic Space Ranger who was originally created by the LGMs to be Buzz Lightyear's new partner, but wound up becoming a member of Team Lightyear and the first official robot Ranger in Star Command.

Physical description

XR is an LGM sized robot that sports Star Command's colors (purple, green, white) and logo on his chassis. He has a disembodied gold/bronze-colored head with yellow optics, encased purple circles and green eyelids. However, sometimes the optics appear green or red depending on his mood. He possesses short arms and legs which can stretch out to any length he wants. He also possesses continuous treads encased in green feet and has a pair of purple hands. His head is surrounded by an oval glass dome.

History

The Xperimental Ranger, or XR for short, was created by the LGMs as the second robot Space Ranger, following the failure of the original XL model, programmed to learn from one of the best Rangers, Buzz Lightyear. The Little Green Men went behind Commander Nebula's jurisdiction and Star Command recruitment protocols when they inducted XR as a ranger, defending that the commander authorized it, unwittingly, after signing the LGMs vacation request through which they apparently slipped XR's acceptance form (and apparently, they do this kind of thing a lot, with Commander Nebula being none the wiser). On his first mission, he imitated Buzz repeatedly during their attempt to save the LGM homeworld from the Evil Emperor Zurg's dark forces, and was destroyed by Buzz's old partner in Zurg's employment, Warp Darkmatter (now Agent Z). The LGMs attempted to rebuild him, but the loss of their Uni-Mind to Zurg left them off their game, leading them to rebuild him with improper parts. This gave him a human, less professional personality, and he was temporarily reassigned as a janitor alongside Booster Munchapper until he eventually joined Buzz's team after helping him save the galaxy from Zurg's Uni-Mind powered mind control machine.

Personality

Originally XR was obedient and dutiful, imitating all Buzz's actions to learn how to act as a ranger, to the veteran hero's annoyance at first. During his first mission with Buzz, XR would quickly gain the admiration of his partner, adapting to the changing combat situations on the LGM homeworld and beginning to develop a personality in the short time the two space rangers had spent together... This would be short lived however, and following his rebuilding, he developed a huge ego and sarcastic sense of humor.

Before his first encounter with Agent Z, XR put all his efforts into assimilating character traits and acumen from his partner and mentor Buzz Lightyear, and had he been allowed to continue along this path, XR may have become an equally legendary space ranger in his own right. Nowadays, despite having great intelligence, XR's personality is deeply selfish and self-serving, frequently looking out for his own self-interests rather than the good of the universe. Should an opportunity for money, women or fame present itself, XR's priorities are known to flip in an instant. He is as childish as Booster, and will openly tease and taunt those around him for his own amusement. He also gets cocky after a single success, yet fearful after he can't repeat the same success twice. Fortunately though, in spite of his numerous personality flaws, XR is genuinely loyal to his friends and team, and at his core, is a dedicated and benevolent Space Ranger.

Buzz Lightyear

While XR tends to view Buzz as an equal, the same isn't the case for Buzz, though the latter doesn't go out of his way to make this clear. XR genuinely respects Buzz deep down and while the robot ranger won't usually admit it, he has been shown to be inspired by Buzz on a number of occasions, though this fact is usually covered up by XR through mocking and disinterest after a moment of true admiration wells up inside him. Buzz, meanwhile, has taken the role of a guardian and parental or sibling figure to XR and sets calm but firm limits on his team member's bad choices, which while not entirely effective on the outset, does keep XR from going off the deep end in life.

Commander Nebula

Despite being created by the LGMs, XR views Commander Nebula as his father, due to the fact that it was his (unknowing) signature that approved XR's creation in the first place. Nebula, who openly dislikes machines, is quick to become agitated when XR expresses this familial love, though deep down he does indeed care for the mechanical ranger and recognizes his efforts, going so far as to mobilize the entire might of Star Command to rescue him if the need presents itself.

Mira Nova

The relationship between XR and Mira is dysfunctional in critical areas because of XR's rude comments towards Mira, who reacts with righteous outrage and threats of violence whenever XR makes these sinful comments. But while this is usually the most memorable part of their relationship and understandably the most troubling, XR and Mira manage to have a level of respect for each other as Space Rangers that has allowed them to continue to work together as a surprisingly effective team, either as a duo or as a trio with Booster when they aren't being led by Buzz Lightyear himself. When Buzz isn't in charge, XR follows Mira's leadership without much issue, though he will tend to be more apathetic towards her orders after his own ideas turn out to be failures, as seen in the events of Mindwarp, though XR rarely disregards Mira's orders when this happens.

XL

XL is XR's prototype and older brother who is trying to take revenge upon Nebula for shutting him down. Most of the time they behave like enemies, but by the end of the episode "Revenge of the Monsters", XL helps to destroy the plans of NOS-4-A2 and becomes an employee of Star Command.

Vulturans

XR possesses deep hatred and anger for Vulturans, due to their scavenging behavior upon spaceships, space stations and, most disturbingly, innocent robots. In the presence of Vulturans, XR will usually descend into a violent rage, attacking with wild abandon.

Powers and abilities

• Advanced Robot Physiology: The eXperimental Ranger, XR, while diminutive compared to most humanoid height standards, has one of the most advanced robotic bodies the galaxy has ever seen. As the LGMs designed and built XR to be able to compliment Buzz Lightyear's legendary prowess in the field as his partner, XR doesn't lack for capability, though experience and humility are qualities that he'd greatly benefit from and would serve to unlock more of his true potential and performance as a Space Ranger, on and off of active duty.
• XR's body and components are constructed of a terillium-carbonic alloy, much like the Space Rangers' Pulsar-400 Enviro-Suits, which as Buzz has stated "will stop any blast short of a supernova" during the events of The Plasma Monster. Due to XR's nature as a fully modular robotic construct, the LGMs weren't limited to the constraints associated with creating space suits. Initially learning valuable lessons from their failed XL prototype project, XR not only proved to be physically resilient, but also mentally and emotionally resilient as well, being able to bounce back from trauma with calm resolve, even in the face of losing his commanding officer and friend.
• XR has extendable arms and legs, an extra pair of backup retractable arms with little purple colored hands, normally stored in his chest cavity. He possesses many pop-out gadgets and weapons, and a special chest cavity behind his a hatch bearing the Star Command logo, with this internal space being capable of storing and deploying a wide variety of objects, tools, gadgets and technologies, which can be much larger than XR himself thanks to his miraculous storage technology. XR's head is not attached to his body, floating freely inside his space helmet, his CP-22 Series robotic eyes are able to shed tears, at an impressive rate in some cases, his head is able to sweat, and he has the ability to spit non-toxic fluids of unknown composition from his mouth. While damaged by Shriekers, XR burped a small electric bolt.
• Despite his immature and irresponsible behavior, XR possesses supernatural intelligence, 2000 gigabytes of memory (which is so well optimized that he can store and process far more information than this amount of data storage/access would normally permit for a computer marketed to consumers in our world as of 2022), has knowledge of all the Space Ranger rules and regulations and combat maneuvers. He also has the ability to read and write (though his writing abilities are lackluster). He has enhanced physical agility and speed and superhuman physical strength. He has the ability to be rebuilt after any damage he receives, either by the LGMs that built him, members of Team Lightyear, or via self-repair systems, depending on severity. Though XR is known to fall apart without much effort, his parts in themselves are highly durable, allowing him to survive many instances that would otherwise be fatal to a Space Ranger. And more surprisingly, XR usually continues to remain cognizant and in his right mind, even while suffering from crippling battle damage, as was the case after taking a direct hit from the weapons of a Vulturan Raider's starship.

• Body Storage: At first glance, XR appears to be quite limited in how much equipment he can store inside of his body, but thanks to some ingenious LGM engineering, this small body of his has more than enough capacity to store and deploy a wide array of items, tools, gadgets and weapons, not to mention attachments and replacement parts. To serve in his job as a Space Ranger, XR has at least two versions of the standard Star Command jetpack built into his chassis, he can deploy multiple guns from his back and hands, and also has one big gun in his chest. He has many other features such as a built-in stove, a jamming signal emitter, and even a portable mirror ball. Altogether, XR's inventory is vast indeed, so it's not hard to understand why the little Robo-Ranger has a few nonsensical items mixed in.

• Jetpacks: As mentioned above, XR has been equipped with and used at least 2 different Star Command issue jetpacks during his time as a rookie Space Ranger. The model he most commonly uses has the appearance of a small stereotypical rocket complete with little swept fins attached near the bottom half of the unit. This metallic-white colored jetpack is powerful enough to propel XR to superluminal velocities in the vacuum of space and also allows him to fly in planetary atmospheres comfortably, being easily capable of propelling XR from the surface of a planet to orbit without any issue. The rocket shaped jetpack is shown to be capable of being overclocked with a simple flip of a switch built into a tool arm normally stored inside XR's chest cavity, when the switch is flipped the jetpack can propel targets with much larger masses to their destinations but at the cost of the ride being highly uncomfortable as the overboosted jetpack and its guidance systems repeatedly perform random maneuvers as they try to compensate for the dramatic increase in performance. While never directly specified, one could argue that this particular modification was the work of XR himself, rather than the LGMs, since XR has been shown to be self-conscious about how others perceive him, especially Commander Nebula, and because the LGMs' access to the Uni-mind often leaves little room for unoptimized engineering of already established technologies. XR's other option is a small standard Star Command jetpack built into his body, which also includes retractable wings to help him glide. This standard issue jetpack proved instrumental in the removal of a Karnian Slime-Beast from Star Cruiser 42's bridge when XR remote controlled the jetpack wirelessly and forced the creature through the bridge's open airlock and into the brig during the events of The Beasts of Karn.

• High Repairability: XR was originally reactivated and prepped by the LGMs as Buzz's new partner after they saw the space ranger brooding over the loss of his last partner, Warp Darkmatter. The Little Green Men "solved" the problem by arranging for Buzz to have a new partner that was not only artificial (and therefore was never alive and thus also cannot be "killed"), but also an extremely repairable robotic unit, regardless of how much damage XR sustains in battle. And true enough, the LGMs demonstrated to Buzz the robot's amendable construction by first blasting XR apart with weaponry and crushing what was left of his body with heavy industrial equipment, only to completely repair XR immediately afterwards and in record time. XR himself has been known to conduct repairs or improvements on his own body after receiving harm or alteration from unfriendly parties, and could even control detached appendages after he was literally blasted apart by enemy fire.

XR's internal storage system contains many different items, with many of the more outlandish ones appearing to be leftovers from the time he was blasted apart by Agent Z during the theft of the Uni-Mind. Other items were likely added by XR himself for personal use, including times when he'd wish to offer said items to someone. Many are for convenience sake. The smallest group of items are Star Command Ordinance and weaponry, and a few items that even XR with his impeccable memory apparently can't remember a reason for carrying.

Tools - Gadgets & Extra Appendages

One could argue that XR rivals a Sirician Army Knife when it comes to the number and variety of tools built into his body. Many of these tools could be considered to be extra appendages because the implements are often connected to very spindly but extremely sturdy robotic arms that extend out of his chest cavity or the center circle of the Star Command logo, with these articulated robotic arms affording XR easy movement and manipulation of the attached tools. On more than one mission, XR made use of miniature robotic arms with little purple colored hands, once to make much needed self repairs, another time to throw a magnet grenade, and on a third occasion, he used one of these little hands to revive a comatose Booster with, of all things... an outrageously putrid smelling sock!

Attachments - Arms and Legs

While the majority of XR's selection of tools and gadgets are stored and deployed from his chest cavity, the little robot ranger also has a few added tricks up his sleeves, and ankles as it turns out. These attachments are deployed directly from (or replace) XR's hands, fingers, or feet and although many of these gadgets and weapons are rarely seen, they are usually very handy in a pinch.

Trivia

• XR was mentioned in a 2010 "Free Comic Book Day" Toy Story comic, "The Return of Buzz Lightyear: Part One".
• According to XR, he failed to pass a certification test for the laser drill aboard Team Lightyear's ship due to spelling errors and neatness in "Sunquake", and in "Gravitina", Buzz is annoyed that XR sent Gravitina the love letter without letting him proofread it. This may prove that XR is not the best at spelling, especially as in "The Return of XL", he misspells "au revoir" as "au revior".
• XR is the only character other than Buzz Lightyear to appear in every episode of the series.
• A running gag in the series involves XR being constantly blown up, but this proves to be little more than an inconvenience rather than a serious problem.
• XR is primarily voiced by Larry Miller, but in select episodes is instead voiced by Neil Flynn. The reason for the change in voices is unknown, as the replacement was sporadic throughout the episode order.
• (Speculation) His character design is rumored to be a reference towards the works of Doug TenNapel, creator of Earthworm Jim.
